Digital Rights, Open-Source Research, Information Integrity, and Human Rights in the Digital Society

 

The European Digital Forensic Laboratory — EDFL is a research, policy analysis, education, and capacity-building initiative of the European Institute of Policy Research and Human Rights, AISBL, an international non-profit association under Belgian law.

EDFL supports public-interest research, professional learning, policy dialogue, and awareness on digital rights, open-source research, information integrity, responsible technology, online harms, and the impact of digital transformation on human rights and society.

The initiative is aligned with EIPRHR’s mission to promote policy-relevant research, evidence-driven discussion, professional engagement, dialogue, collaboration, and ethical analysis of global and regional challenges.

Our Purpose

Digital technologies influence how people access information, participate in public life, communicate, learn, advocate, and document social concerns. At the same time, online misinformation, disinformation, digital exclusion, online harassment, harmful narratives, and misuse of technology can affect human dignity, equality, civil liberties, public trust, and vulnerable communities.

EDFL was created to strengthen responsible research, digital awareness, information integrity, and rights-based policy dialogue in the digital environment.

The initiative operates strictly within EIPRHR’s non-profit, educational, research, advocacy, and capacity-building mandate.

Mission

EDFL’s mission is to promote responsible digital research, human rights awareness, information integrity, and public-interest learning through research, policy analysis, publications, seminars, workshops, professional development activities, and international cooperation.

EDFL helps students, researchers, professionals, civil society actors, educators, and institutions better understand digital challenges and develop ethical, lawful, and evidence-based approaches to digital information, rights, and policy issues.

Core Focus Areas

Digital Rights and Civil Liberties

EDFL examines the relationship between digital technologies and human rights, including privacy, freedom of expression, access to information, equality, non-discrimination, participation, and protection of vulnerable groups.

Open-Source Research and Public-Interest Analysis

EDFL promotes responsible open-source research methods for academic, policy, educational, and public-interest purposes. This includes source evaluation, digital information assessment, media literacy, transparency, and ethical research practice.

Information Integrity and Disinformation Awareness

EDFL supports research and awareness on misinformation, disinformation, manipulated narratives, harmful online content, and the effects of unreliable information on public trust, democratic participation, and social cohesion.

Responsible Technology and Governance

EDFL contributes to policy dialogue on artificial intelligence, digital platforms, technology governance, online accountability, digital literacy, and rights-based approaches to emerging technologies.

Human Rights and Digital Society

EDFL studies how digital transformation affects individuals, communities, civil society, institutions, and vulnerable groups, with a focus on dignity, inclusion, equality, justice, and public-interest protection.

Online Harms and Protection of Vulnerable Groups

EDFL supports awareness and research on online abuse, harassment, hate speech, digital discrimination, gender-based online harms, child protection concerns, and risks affecting vulnerable or marginalised communities.

What EDFL Does

EDFL may undertake the following activities:

conduct research and policy analysis on digital rights, information integrity, open-source research, technology governance, and online harms;

publish policy briefs, research papers, reports, articles, explainers, and educational resources;

organise seminars, conferences, workshops, and professional development activities;

develop short non-formal learning and micro-certification activities connected to digital rights, information integrity, responsible technology, and public-interest research;

support advocacy and awareness on civil liberties, anti-discrimination, inclusion, and protection of vulnerable groups in the digital environment;

facilitate dialogue and collaboration among researchers, professionals, civil society organisations, academic institutions, NGOs, public-interest actors, and international partners;

contribute to EU-wide and international cooperation on human rights, social inclusion, digital literacy, and responsible technology policy.
